Seasonal snowpack for beginning of 2023 is less than optimal. Two small storms (early Nov and 29 Dec) to date; shallow and agressive effects of strong temperature gradients. Very Weak strength composed of facets and decomposing (faceting) crusts. Current risk of avalanches is moderate thanks to lack of snow. Small slabs on North ridgetops can be triggered by a single rider. Bottom Line: Only a large storm can confidently perform a mechanical reset of this malignant base. Failing this, expect dangerous avalanche conditions with each successive snowfall and recurring avalanches failing on a prolific bed of persistent weak grains until Spring. The weather forecast entering the second week of January is consistent with the second scenairo; small storms loading a weak snowpack with slab formation...Loading the gun in terms of avalanche risk. Backcountry riders would do well to review and prepare for continental snowpack conditions for stress free riding with prudent expectations.
